Black Fire (1964) immediately stood out as an impressive album, critically acclaimed upon its release. Andrew Hill's music on this first album for Blue Note was bold and avant-gardist both in rhythmic patterns and complex modal harmonies.
Black Fire also marked the beginning of an astonishing series of great albums, still recognized today as masterpieces of modern post-bop: Judgement! (1964), Point of Departure (1965) and Smoke Stack (1966).
Hill's quartet of this creative period featured Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.
Blue Note Records' Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series. Produced by Joe Harley, all-analog, mastered from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) and pressed on 180g audiophile vinyl at Record Technology Incorporated (RTI).
