Two classics combined into one - « Brilliant Corners » and « Thelonius Himself »

Among the personalities in modern music, Thelonious Monk most certainly remains one the most challenging figures. Initially misunderstood and neglected by the so-called jazz scene, Monk stood up to become one of the main shapers of new jazz.

On Brilliant Corners, Thelonious Monk (piano) is accompanied by Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone), Ernie Henry (alto saxophone), Clark Terry (trumpet), Max Roach (drums), Paul Chambers and Oscar Pettiford (double bass). The album was originally released in 1957.

On "Thelonius himself", included in the present reissue on a second disc, Monk is alone at the piano - except for the last track where he is joined by saxophonist John Coltrane and bassist Wilbur Ware. The album was originally released in 1959.
