Harmony Of Difference - Kamasi Washington

Avant-garde jazz titan Kamasi Washington has unveiled his first new solo project since 2015’s remarkable jazz opus The Epic.

Harmony of Difference which premiered as part of the Whitney Museum of American Art 2017 Biennial alongside a film by A.G. Rojas, features five original movements, fused into one simultaneous performance piece in the final act; the suite explores the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as “counterpoint,” which Washington defines as “the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies”.

The EP artwork, contributed by Kamasi’s sister Amani Washington, follows a similar structure, with her five initial pieces created five pieces combined to create a sixth painting that reveals a human face.
