Reimagining Górecki’s “Symphony No. 3”

Sorrow is a brilliant reimagination of the most famous work from Polish composer Henrick Górecki, “Symphony No 3” aka “Symphony of Sorrowful Songs», by the talented multi-instrumentalist Colin Stetson. Stetson for the project, enlisted the help of superb violinist and Arcade Fire member Sarah Neufeld, cellist Rebecca Foon (a veteran of the Canadian indie scene) and Greg Fox, drummer with black metal legends Liturgy, alongside a host of other guest musicians. The soprano on the album is Megan Stetson, Colin Stetson's sister.

Stetson, an experimental saxophonist, has worked extensively live and in studio with an impressive range of artists including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Jolie Holland, Sinead O’Connor, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, and David Gilmore.

His astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what horn playing can sound like. On Sorrow, his vision of Górecki’s work and his unique way of playing, combined with the complicity he develops with guest artists give a new dimension to this reinterpretation of the symphony.
