The Epic is an imposing work! A true Jazz odyssey!
The Epic is a striking and masterful 172-minute work comprising of 17 Kamasi Washington compositions performed by a group of ten extraordinary musicians, each of whom is individually considered among the best young musicians on the planet - including bassists Thundercat and his brother Ronald Bruner Jr., drummers Miles Mosley and Tony Austin, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, pianist Cameron Graves and trombonist Ryan Porter – and accompanied by an orchestra of 32 musicians and a choir of 20 people. The ethereal voices of Patrice Quinn and Dwight Trible complete the group.
The story that The Epic tells, without words, rather by a combination of magic, mastery and imaginative force, is the story of the visionary Kamasi Washington and Next Step and their collective mission: to make jazz new, unexpected, dangerous again and animated with the spirit and the fervor of spiritual Jazz transmitted by John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders.
Recorded at the Kingsize Soundlabs, headquarters for this band of Californian Jazz musicians, and produced for the Brainfeeder label, The Epic propels the young Kamasi Washington, who was introduced on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and, Cosmogramma and You're Dead! Of Flying Lotus, to the pantheon of the great ones of the genre.
The Epic is presented in a set of three vinyl records box set.
