Defining Hardbop in the ‘60s.

Saxophonist Wayne Shorter and trumpeter Lee Morgan practically defined the hard bop of the 1960s.

Recorded in 1960 at the Bell Sound Studio in New York, The Young Lions is the first and last album by this great formation featuring Lee Morgan (trumpet), Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Frank Strozier (alto saxophone), Louis Hayes (drums), Bobby Timmons (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass), Albert Heath (drums).

Of the five tracks of the album, three were composed by a young Wayne Shorter, labeled as the surprise of the year by Cannonball Adderley; the two other tracks belong to Bobby Timmons and Lee Morgan respectively.

“Shorter, a true non-conformist player who is completely independent stylistically…”  Cannonball Adderly
