Unknown Pleasures – Joy Division

Released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures, Joy Division’s first album, still defies time; as much musically and lyrically, with the originality and the melodramatic power of this band from Manchester, as sonically, with the cold, spacious and enigmatic production of Martin Hannett… without forgetting the album’s iconic cover by Peter Saville, composed of white radio waves on a black background.

In the span of only two albums, Joy Division have deeply affected the evolution of rock music beyond punk, just as singer Ian Curtis’ suicide (at age 23) still resonates today. Unknown Pleasures remains, quite simply, an indispensable, if not vital, landmark album.
